About Mai's Restaurant

Located at 3403 Milam St, Houston, TX 77002, Mai's Restaurant operates as a vietnamese serving Houston in Texas. This page gathers the practical details people usually look for before visiting: where it is, how to reach it, when it opens and how customers rate it.

This group covers Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian and other Asian cuisines that are not Chinese, and the etiquette varies by kitchen. Japanese and Korean restaurants often take reservations for dinner and may add a service charge for large groups; Thai and Vietnamese spots are usually walk-in and quick-turnover. Spice levels are frequently adjustable on request at Thai, Indian and Sichuan-adjacent menus, so say if you want it mild or hot. Korean BBQ restaurants typically charge per person for all-you-can-eat service with a time limit, and grills are shared at the table. Vietnamese pho shops post bowl sizes (regular or large) and a plate of herbs, bean sprouts and lime is normal to add yourself. Card and tap-to-pay are widely accepted; cash-only is more common at small family-run counters.

Houston is in Texas, in the South, where summers are hot and humid, winters are short, and severe storms in spring are a fact of life; businesses run air conditioning most of the year and many open early to beat the heat. Traffic in Houston peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

I’ve eaten at Mai’s many times over the years before because it’s a Houston staple, but this visit was really disappointing. It was also my first in many years. I ordered two shrimp fried rice entrΓ©es to go at $17 each, and both containers were only about half full. When I opened them, I could literally see the bottom of the container. For that price, I expected a full servingβ€”not what felt like half a portion. The food itself wasn’t the issue; it was the value. Charging premium prices while serving noticeably underfilled containers is disappointing, especially for a restaurant with such a strong reputation. Also... It's rice. Why are yall skimping your customers out on rice? I’ve included photos of the untouched containers so people can judge for themselves. I hope this was just an off day, but if this is the new standard, I’ll be taking my business elsewhere.

Good if you want something other than late-night fast food. Service felt rushed, the chicken over rice was very dry, and the steak was good. Nothing special, so I probably wouldn't go out my way to return.

I have been eating here on and off for almost 10 years. The only dish I get is their Ca Kho To and the flavor and portion sizes have always been consistent. I LOVE this dish! I'm grateful it's still on their menu.

The food is good and sometimes it's a smaller portion than normal. Today it was one of those days when it was a smaller portion but everything was very flavorful service was amazing and location is perfect because it is close to my job. We normally come during lunch hour but today I came a little bit after lunch when it was empty so they gave me opportunity to sit in around it and I got my favorite waiter all to myself. I got the house special fried rice cuz I have everything I like in it. You should come by and check it out if you're running downtown and then search for some great food and mixed drinks

I love Mai's! The service is always great. I get the vegetarian egg rolls and the shrimp with vegetables pho. Highly recommend.
